Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites Celebrates 85th Anniversary
Atlanta (March 1, 2016) - Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites encompass 85,000 acres across the state, from the high mountain peaks of north Georgia to the coastal plains and marshlands on Georgia’s east coast. The Georgia State Park System was founded in 1931 with just two properties and has now grown to more than 60 sites that protect Georgia’s natural resources. 2016 marks Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites’ 85-year anniversary, and the parks are commemorating with several programs throughout the year, including a state-wide hike for National Trails Day on June 4 and the launch of the Hidden Gems series.
From Easy Strolls to the Toughest Climbs: Hike These Georgia State Park Trails
ATLANTA (February 8, 2016) -- In North Georgia, hike across mountains with elevations ranging from sea level to elevations of more than 3,600 feet. In South Georgia, hike the coastal plains and along marshes. Georgia State Parks has more than 60 parks and historic sites across the state and this year celebrates its 85th anniversary. From the toughest climbs to the easiest strolls, including ADA-accessible trails, these parks offer hundreds of trails where hikers can find Georgia’s most beautiful landmarks including cascading waterfalls, canyons and mountain vistas.
National Trails Day is June 4, 2016
ATLANTA, February 15, 2016 -- Georgians of all ages are invited to lace up their hiking boots this June in celebration of National Trails Day and the 85th anniversary of Georgia’s State Park System. Park rangers are saying “hike with us on our birthday” as a way to honor our country’s largest public trail event. Sponsored by the American Hiking Society, National Trails Day is held the first Saturday of each June and highlights 200,000 miles of trails that crisscross America.

New Cabins and Boardwalk Open at Laura S. Walker State Park
WAYCROSS, GA., January 22, 2016 -- Guests at Laura S. Walker State Park in Waycross can soon enjoy sipping coffee from their cabin porch while watching wildlife around the lake. On February 20, park officials will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for six new Sportsman’s Cabins and a 1,500-foot boardwalk. The public is invited to the 11 a.m. ceremony.

ATLANTA, January 18, 2016 – With spring just around the corner, many Georgians are beginning to think ahead to warmer weather and weekend escapes. The newly published “2016 Guide to Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites” is a handy resource for planning a spring break, summer vacation or family reunion. The free booklet is filled with tips on the best hiking trails, fishing spots, wedding venues and accommodations. It also includes new accommodations, such as yurts at Sweetwater Creek State Park near Atlanta and sportsman’s cabins at Laura S. Walker State Park near Waycross.
Georgia's State Parks Celebrate New Year's Day with "First Day Hikes"
ATLANTA, December 4, 2015 -- All across the country, park rangers are inviting Americans to start the New Year with an energizing First Day Hike. In Georgia's State Parks and Historic Sites, dozens of guided treks will encourage friends and families to connect with nature and each other. First Day Hikes are part of a nationwide initiative from America's State Parks to get people outdoors, with more than 400 hikes scheduled in all 50 states. According to Georgia State Park officials, winter is a particularly scenic time for enjoying trails because the open canopy means hikers can see farther through the woods.
Five Georgia State Parks to Mountain Bike This Winter
(November 22, 2015) - Mountain biking in early winter, before the freezing temperatures, is one of the best times to hit the trails in Georgia, where thinning trees reveal beautiful scenery. At Georgia State Parks, mountain bikers can also spending the night at the park’s accommodations, giving more time to enjoy the trails. First-timers and advanced riders will find an array of trails to dirty up the tires. With gravel paths and single tracks, Georgia State Parks has options for all riders, but five of the best mountain bike trails are at Cloudland Canyon, Fort Mountain, Fort Yargo, Unicoi State Park and Watson Mill Bridge state parks, while the Muddy Spokes Club provides riders with a list of 68 miles of trails to cover.
Georgia State Parks Offers Hot Deals for Snowbirds Headed South
ATLANTA (November 12, 2015) — Snowbirds migrating south for the winter will find attractive incentives, both recreationally and financially, to rest their wings at 12 Georgia State Parks. From November 2015 through February 28, 2016, select Georgia State Parks are offering discounts of 30 to 50 percent off their already low rates on campsites. Depending upon the park and the length of stay, extended-stay rates can be as low as $9.50 per night for a campsite with considerable amenities.
Georgia Plan for Outdoor Recreation: Public Invited to Offer Opinions
ATLANTA, October 15, 2015 – Every five years, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conducts a statewide survey of public needs and gathers an inventory of outdoor recreation assets. From those assessments, it formulates a policy document that provides guidance to local, state and federal facilities by recognizing trends and identifying needs.

Public Opinion Sought on Georgia’s Outdoor Recreation Services
ATLANTA, September 1, 2015 -- The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has commissioned the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute of Government to complete a statewide public opinion survey regarding outdoor recreation services. The institute’s Survey Research and Evaluation unit will conduct a telephone survey of more than 1,000 respondents over the next month.
Georgia State Park Visitors Get Free Admission in Exchange for Volunteering on "Your State Parks Day"
ATLANTA, August 14, 2015 -- In celebration of National Public Lands Day, Georgia's state parks and historic sites are inviting citizens to volunteer for a variety of projects on Saturday, September 26. The statewide "Your State Parks Day" is sponsored by Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and enhancing the state’s natural and historical treasures. While visitors normally pay a $5 parking fee at state parks or a $4–$12 admission fee at state historic sites, Friends will be paying the parking or admission fees for everyone who lends a helping hand to encourage participation in the event.
New Yurt Village Opens Soon at Sweetwater Creek State Park
August 14, 2015 (Atlanta, Ga.) – Atlanta’s closest state park, Sweetwater Creek State Park, celebrates a landmark occasion this fall with the opening of its first overnight accommodations: a 10-unit yurt village and a tent campground. Starting September 1, the state park will take reservations for the yurts and tent camping.
Hamburg to be Re-classified as 'State Park' due to Washington County Support
Washington, GA, August 6, 2015 -- The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has entered into an agreement with Washington County to reclassify Hamburg Outdoor Recreation Area as a State Park. Beginning next March, park visitors will be able to make advance reservations for campsites and check in at a staffed park office. For the past few years, the park's office has been closed and campers have self-registered for tent and RV sites.

Four State Parks Among Top 100 Fishing Spots in U.S.
ATLANTA, GA, June 2, 2015 — Four of Georgia’s State Parks have been recognized among the 2015 Top 100 Family Friendly Places to Boat and Fish in the U.S., according to Take Me Fishing. Those selected include Tugaloo on Lake Hartwell, High Falls near Jackson, Fort Yargo in Winder and Georgia Veterans in Cordele. 'Natural' Peregrine Falcon nest is first in 80 years
TALLULAH FALLS, GA., May 13, 2015 -- For the first time in nearly 80 years, a Peregrine Falcon nest in a natural setting has been spotted in Georgia. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) staff confirmed the nest and two chicks at Tallulah Gorge State Park on Monday. The only other known peregrine nests in the state are atop office buildings in Atlanta.

National Kids to Parks Day is May 16
ATLANTA, May 7, 2015 -- Georgia’s State Parks and Historic Sites have planned dozens of family-friendly activities in celebration of “National Kids to Parks Day” on May 16. Sponsored by the National Park Trust, the celebration encourages children to explore public lands. The trust estimates more than 500,000 people will attend events across the country in what is called America's national “day of play.”
$2.5 Million in Trail Grants Awarded for Recreation in Georgia
ATLANTA, April 1, 2015 -- The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced the award of 27 new grants totaling $2.5 million for trails around the state. The selected projects will provide new outdoor recreation opportunities for a variety of trail user groups. A total of 87 applications requesting approximately $9 million were received from state, federal and local governments during this grant cycle.
Public Meeting to Discuss Fort Yargo State Park's Master Plan
WINDER, GA, March 31, 2015 -- Winder- and Athens-area citizens are invited to a public meeting next week to discuss a master plan for Fort Yargo State Park. Recently during the first round of comments, park users suggested additions such as a dog park, wedding venue, zip line, paved trail and festival field to be considered. During the April 7 meeting, officials will discuss feasibility of these amenities and request additional public feedback. The master plan is intended to be a long-range vision for the park, looking up to 20 or more years into the future.
